CLOUDFLARE

‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍What Is Cloudflare, and What Does It Actually Do for My Website?

You’ve heard the name. Here’s what Cloudflare really does — faster, safer, more reliable sites — in plain English.

Cloudflare

Cloudflare sits between your website and the rest of the internet, making it faster, safer and more reliable — and a remarkable amount of it is free. Here’s what that actually means for your site, without the jargon.

1. It makes your site faster (the CDN)

Cloudflare runs a global network of servers in 300+ cities. When you put your site behind it, copies of your content are cached at those locations. A visitor in London is served from London, one in Tokyo from Tokyo — instead of everyone waiting on a single server in one place. Less distance, less waiting, a faster site for everyone.

2. It protects your site (security)

Because all traffic passes through Cloudflare first, it can filter out the bad stuff before it ever reaches you:

  • DDoS attacks — floods of malicious traffic meant to knock you offline — are absorbed and dispersed.
  • A Web Application Firewall blocks common exploits and known-bad requests.
  • Bot management filters scrapers and abusive crawlers while letting Google through.

For most small and mid-sized sites, this turns “I hope we don’t get attacked” into a non-issue.

3. It manages your domain (DNS)

Cloudflare runs one of the fastest DNS networks in the world — the system that translates your domain name into the server it points to. Moving your DNS to Cloudflare makes name lookups quick and gives you a clean, modern dashboard to manage everything. Its registrar also sells domains at cost, with none of the renewal games some others play.

4. It gives you HTTPS for free

Cloudflare provides a free, auto-renewing SSL certificate, so your site gets the padlock and the encrypted, “Secure” treatment browsers now demand — with nothing to buy or remember to renew.

5. It can host your whole site (Pages & Workers)

Beyond sitting in front of an existing site, Cloudflare can be your host. Cloudflare Pages serves static sites for free with unlimited bandwidth, and Workers run custom code (forms, redirects, whole APIs) right at the edge. We host and operate many of our clients’ sites entirely on this stack — fast, resilient and inexpensive.

The short version: Cloudflare makes your site quicker for visitors, harder for attackers, and cheaper to run — often at no cost for the essentials.

Do you need it?

For the vast majority of sites, yes. The free plan alone delivers speed, security and HTTPS that used to cost real money. If you’d like, we’ll set it up for you and make sure it’s configured properly — the details matter, and a misconfigured setup can cause as many problems as it solves.
